Ken Beilman the Jazz Musician:

Ken Beilman, MD is an Internal Medicine specialist with a lifelong passion for music and especially jazz music. He began his first piano lessons at the age of 6 and has remained involved as a pianist, in varying degrees, throughout his entire life. Medical school, residency, seven years of Emergency Medicine, and then setting up and growing his solo private practice were so demanding that not enough time was left to pursue music to his liking - until recently. The past five to ten years have provided more time for his music, and Ken has been able to more fully immerse himself in it.

Dr. Beilman studied classical piano for 10 years in his youth but has always had a penchant for jazz. His mother was a pianist, as was her mother and Ken was exposed to jazz from an early age. However, he did not seriously pursue performing jazz until he completed his training as a physician and had the time to pursue it. Ken has studied jazz piano privately with Steve Crews, Dick Sisto, Todd Hildreth, Chris Fitzgerald, and John Bizianes and has participated in University of Louisville jazz combos. He has hosted and performed at his annual jazz party, Celebration of Jazz, in his home for the past 20 consecutive years. The Celebration of Jazz event features performances by local and regional jazz musicians, as well as by some nationally known artists, such as Mulgrew Miller. Dr. Beilman is also known for being a regular sponsor of University of Louisville Jazz Fest. Other performances of his have been at the Rudyard Kipling and sitting in at the Seelbach Hotel with Dick Sisto. On five occasions, Ken has appeared at the Jefferson County Medical Society's annual Evening of Arts and Medicine as the pianist in the group, Dr. B. and the Boppers.
